Rules

Below is list of rules of how I play, house rules of the NYBA and background on how it was created and why.

Normally, I manually play 99% of every NYBA league game.  AAA is always simmed.

During manual play - I set up lineups for both teams.  Then I tend to sim the first 3-4-5 innings, depending upon how the scoring goes.  If there is little or no scoring, I will sim more, if the starter(s) are getting lit up, I will take control (ultimately make sure they aren't being pulling too early).  I will then play as the manager for both teams.  My style of play is pro-platoon, pro-double switch and pro-lefty/righty.  Meaning, I will sub early and often.

House Rules of the NYBA:

There are 12 teams in the NYBA, in leagues split between 6 northern (Upstate) teams and 6 southern (City) teams.  There are 12 corresponding and linked AAA teams that play in 4 assorted divisions.

There are 28 player pro rosters (35 man rosters in September) and 45 man organization rosters.

2011 Trades

With the trade deadline about to pass in 2011 season, lets review all the trades that were completed this year.

Tuesday, July 26th, 2011

The Staten Island Rage traded 24-year-old minor league shortstop Jorge Franco, 23-year-old third baseman Dan Jackson, 19-year-old minor league left fielder Mike Breen, 37-year-old minor league left fielder Bryce Davis and 21-year-old minor league third baseman Eugene Ray to the Hempstead Heat, getting 27-year-old reliever Javier López, 20-year-old minor league shortstop Abraham Richardson, 24-year-old minor league reliever Mark Clark, 28-year-old minor league reliever Logan Fitzgerald, 22-year-old minor league starting pitcher Julius Burt and 24-year-old minor league left fielder Keith O'Neil in return.

Key Player: Jorge Franco

Key Prospect:  Jorge Franco

Trade Swing:  Hempstead

For the Heat to obtain a possible future all-star shortstop is a win for them.  They gave up two solid prospects in Burt and O'Neil and one very good reliever, but Franco has a chance to surpass them all in this trade.  Staten Island is satisfied in this haul though.  They had no room for Franco and they are able to obtain some prospects and a much needed reliable reliever in the bullpen.

Saturday, July 23rd, 2011

The Long Island Sound Tigers traded 25-year-old minor league shortstop Fred Mathis and 38-year-old left fielder Troy Quinn to the Brooklyn Black Sox, getting 28-year-old first baseman Mark Harris, 34-year-old third baseman Patrick Kaiser, 35-year-old minor league starting pitcher Kenneth Larson and 24-year-old minor league left fielder Doug Dotson in return.

Key Player:  Mark Harris

Key Prospect: Fred Mathis

Trade Swing: Long Island

Long Island gets a solid first baseman in Mark Harris for the playoff push and for the foreseeable future.  Robin Dixon is no longer the player he was.  Fred Mathis can be a solid player, but not like Jorge Franco.  Still Brooklyn had a surplus of first baseman and needed a solid shortstop.

Monday, July 18th, 2011

The Albany Admirals traded 30-year-old minor league shortstop Rick Walton and 19-year-old minor league third baseman Martín Sánchez to the Cooperstown Pride, getting 26-year-old minor league catcher Robbie Aarden in return.

Key Player: Robbie Aarden

Key Prospect: N/A

Trade Swing: Albany

With the injury of Ryan Hogan, Albany obtains an average backup catcher.  Nothing much here.

Saturday, June 25th, 2011

The Niagara Falls Pirates traded 26-year-old reliever Francisco Sánchez, 29-year-old third baseman Bennett Tinker and 32-year-old starting pitcher Jonathan Schultz to the Long Island Sound Tigers, getting 23-year-old minor league starting pitcher Tomás Hernández, 28-year-old minor league starting pitcher Paul Smith, 31-year-old reliever Matt Harrington, 32-year-old third baseman Gordon Hammond and 22-year-old minor league third baseman Rusty Avery in return.

Key Player: Bennett Tinker

Key Prospect: N/A

Trade Swing: Long Island

A complete trade dump and salary dump by Niagara Falls.  Hammond is a solid veteran and Hernandez/Smith could be serviceable starters, but this trade was made out of frustration by Niagara Falls.

Friday, June 24th, 2011

The Yonkers Horsemen traded 34-year-old closer Francisco Rosário, 22-year-old minor league reliever Alex Shay and 26-year-old minor league starting pitcher Shane Jones to the Montauk Clippers, getting 36-year-old reliever Justin James, 22-year-old minor league reliever Dave Ferguson, 26-year-old minor league left fielder Jorge González, 21-year-old minor league center fielder Gordon Haas, 21-year-old minor league reliever William Simms and 24-year-old minor league starting pitcher Brian Powers in return.

Thursday, June 23rd, 2011

The Rochester Red Roosters traded 22-year-old reliever Millard Johnson, 19-year-old minor league center fielder Quinn Campbell, 18-year-old minor league reliever Héctor Pimentel, 22-year-old second baseman Dave Tucker and 22-year-old minor league second baseman Mark Anderson to the Manhattan Skyliners, getting 20-year-old minor league starting pitcher Chad Robbins, 20-year-old minor league first baseman César Cortéz, 32-year-old reliever Duane Waters and 23-year-old minor league second baseman Jon Wall in return.

Monday, June 20th, 2011

The Niagara Falls Pirates traded 39-year-old first baseman Mike Drew to the Manhattan Skyliners, getting 23-year-old minor league right fielder James Carpenter, 23-year-old minor league starting pitcher Jay Sparks and 28-year-old minor league reliever Ángel Villanueva in return.

Saturday, June 18th, 2011

The Manhattan Skyliners traded 22-year-old minor league catcher Raúl Romero and 26-year-old minor league first baseman Víctor Alomar to the Yonkers Horsemen, getting 27-year-old minor league center fielder Sergio Cruz and 27-year-old minor league starting pitcher Kevin Jacobs in return.

Friday, June 10th, 2011

The Rochester Red Roosters traded 29-year-old catcher Bud Clark, 26-year-old minor league right fielder Mike Roberts and 19-year-old minor league reliever Rodrigo Gonzáles to the Niagara Falls Pirates, getting 40-year-old minor league reliever John Alford, 39-year-old minor league first baseman Miguel Zambrano and 36-year-old minor league first baseman Dave Phillips in return.

Thursday, June 9th, 2011

The Syracuse Orange Crush traded 37-year-old minor league first baseman Dave Harmon, 29-year-old minor league third baseman Jeff Pollock and 19-year-old minor league center fielder Ed Harnett to the Albany Admirals, getting 30-year-old reliever George Carr, 20-year-old minor league starting pitcherGeoffrey Baird, 23-year-old minor league right fielder Jon Martin and $750,000 in cash in return.

Friday, May 13th, 2011

The Bronx Bombers traded 31-year-old minor league reliever Gus Smart to the Albany Admirals, getting 22-year-old minor league starting pitcher Eric Hudson and 23-year-old minor league third baseman Johnny Russell in return.

Sunday, March 13th, 2011

The Buffalo Bullets traded 19-year-old minor league right fielder Luc Martel and 23-year-old minor league closer Donovan Wood to the Long Island Sound Tigers, getting 21-year-old left fielder Juan Marino and 21-year-old minor league reliever Ken Fisher in return.

Key Player:  Donovan Wood

Key Prospect:  Luc Martel

Trade Swing:  Long Island

Wood has been huge for the Tigers this year and Marino has been sub-par for the Bullets.  I think Buffalo is going to eat this one for years to come.

Thursday, March 10th, 2011

The Cooperstown Pride traded 19-year-old minor league first baseman Pedro Leal and 21-year-old minor league center fielder Matt Marshall to the Staten Island Rage, getting 32-year-old reliever Andrew Porter in return.

Key Player:  Andrew Porter

Key Prospect: Matt Marshall

Trade Swing: Cooperstown

Even with Porter pitching so poorly for the Pride this year, it will even itself out.  Marshall is a solid prospect with aspirations of being a super utility player with some pop.

The Staten Island Rage traded 34-year-old starting pitcher Luis Espinosa to the Buffalo Bullets, getting 37-year-old starting pitcher Haywood Clements, 27-year-old center fielder Kane Peterson, 19-year-old minor league closer Júlio De La Cruz and 20-year-old minor league left fielder Jake Griffin in return.

Key Player:  Luis Espinosa

Key Prospect: N/A

Trade Swing:  Buffalo

Salary dump by the Rage nets them a 4th outfielder and two poor prospects.  Espinosa hasn't done much for the Bullets so if it stays that way, the Rage might have pulled the plug at the right time.

The Yonkers Horsemen traded 19-year-old minor league second baseman Warren Hamilton, 34-year-old minor league third baseman Patrick Kaiser and 20-year-old minor league left fielder Theron Woods to the Brooklyn Black Sox, getting 35-year-old third baseman Bill Reilly and $1,300,000 in cash in return.

Key Player:  Bill Reilly

Key Prospect: N/A

Trade Swing: Yonkers

Reilly hasn't done much for the Horseman but at least they are being paid most of his salary.  A complete salary dump.  None of the players that the BSox got will ever be worth talking about.

Niagara Falling

The Niagara Falls Pirates have won the New York Cup three out of the last four years. But this year, General Manager Double-Jo Monroe decided in June to give up on the season with plenty of games left to play. "We were hovering around .500 and I felt our roster was getting old and I didn't think we had what it took this year to repeat", stated Monroe.

Bennett Tinker, who was instrumental in their playoff run last year, signed a new 3 year, 7.2 million dollar contract in the offseason and then started the season with an ugly slash line of .178/.218/.322 with nine homeruns.  "The fans were getting frustrated and we felt a move was necessary." stated Monroe. In 2010, he hit 39 homeruns with 98 runs batted in and played a solid defensive third base.

Mike Drew, a future hall of famer, who had been a Pirate for the last 6 years and was arguably the franchise's best hitter, was deemed surplus as well by Monroe. Monroe commented "Drew is about to turn 40 and has another season on his contract of 2.2 million dollars in 2012.  Manhattan came calling and we received a solid prospect in return. This was a no-brainer for us."

Jonathan Schultz, one of the franchises top winning pitchers, got off to a slow 4-7 start with a over 5 ERA and Monroe sent him packing as well. However, he was due over 2+ million and with 3 more years left on his contract. Three of the top Pirates in 2010 were shipped out for younger and cheaper players.

Two of the players Monroe did land, was James Carpenter and Gordon Hammond.  Carpenter, A future 20-20 guy in the making and Hammond, a solid veteran third baseman.

Niagara now has the fourth lowest payroll and even though they have one of the highest attendance and gate revenues so far this season, since the trade - attendance has gone down nearly 4,000 per game.

Currently, Niagara is 41-43 - 9 games out but only 2 games out of the wildcard spot.

On 06/20/2011 - Mike Drew traded by the Niagara Falls Pirates to the Manhattan Skyliners in exchange for RF James Carpenter, SP Jay Sparks, MR Ángel Villanueva.

On 06/25/2011 - Bennett Tinker was traded by the Niagara Falls Pirates to the Long Island Sound Tigers, along with MR Francisco Sánchez, SP Jonathan Schultz, in exchange for SP Tomás Hernández, SP Paul Smith, MR Matt Harrington, 3B Gordon Hammond, 3B Rusty Avery.

3 up 3 down

In OOTP, especially in solo play, there are always players that play above their ratings and below their ratings or at least what you expect their ratings to output, statistically.  These types of players always fascinate me the most.  Here are the six players in the 2011 NYBA season that are playing above and below their ratings

3 up:

Orlando De La Garza - Not only does he have an awesome name, but he has been the most exciting player for the Pirates this year.  More of a platoon player since (ratings wise) he can't hit lefties, but when he plays he's been a solid contributor.  Even career wise, he has a solid .295/.332/.480 slash line.  Sure, it's a small sample size, but hitting .333 with running in scoring position with 26 RBIs and hitting .370 close/late - is impressive.

Joseph Sinclair - 2011 All-star pitcher, Joseph Sinclair has been easily the Blacksox's best pitcher.  In 2010, he put up similar first half numbers (only to get shelled in the second half), making the All-star game as well.  But this year, he's turned it up a notch.  He's top 10 in ERA, Wins and WHIP.  The super low BABIP of .255, points to a leveling out here but for the meantime we can enjoy his 13-5 3.22 season so far.

Tyler Warren - 2011 All-star snub, Tyler Warren should have made the All-star team this year.  Tyler has done a complete 180 from his first season in Staten Island in 2010.  10-9 3.35, with a body shape of Sidney Ponson, how can you not love this guy?  .242 BABIP also points to a leveling out here to his career average.

3 down:

Stan Bowden - Does this player have bust written all over it?  No.  But, he's really playing under his rating scale.  Sure, once again, small sample size and maybe he's got some rookie rust.  But this guy is pretty pathetic right now, I've even benched him right now.

Andrew Porter - 3 time reliever of the year award winner.  Gets traded to the Pride for two solid prospects before the season starts and completely stinks it up for them in 2011.  5 blown saves, an ERA of almost 5, sure he's 32 but in a league that closers dominate - this guy is really playing under his ratings.

Ralph Jackson -  .211/.279/.311 - from a guy who hit 31 HRs and drove in 96 runs in just under 500 ABs in 2010.  Furthermore, with other players around him playing so much better than he is, he's starting to find himself more and more on the bench in Staten Island.  Could be on the trading block before the trade deadline.
